Whatever your thoughts may be on pole-dancing, many women are turning to it as more than just performance art, but also as a form of aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Not only does it do great work for one's core, but it also improves your overall strength and helps you tone up. But more than that, pole dancing can also be empowering and an incredible confidence booster. Just ask 56-year-old pole-dancing aficionado Makeda Smith.
After going through some major financial setbacks in 2008 and 2009, including the loss of her home, car and even her dog (not to mention her man as well), Smith sought out something to help her move forward. She tried yoga, but when that didn't really move her in the way she hoped, she bought a deal for pole-dancing classes and in no time, fell in love. However, as she told XoNecole.com, it became a passion that she initially felt she would need to keep to herself considering that some see pole-dancing as risqué.
"One part of my mind kept telling me I was too old and just crazy to be starting this regimen at my age," she said. "But there are so many women pole dancing now over 40, over 50, and even over 60– you would be amazed."

She eventually decided to embrace her love of pole-dancing and even started performing at nightclubs sometimes as a hobby. Smith said she doesn't undress and she purely does it for fun and for the way it makes her feel -- not for a living.
"It is more than exercising for me," she shared with XoNecole. "It is total rejuvenation of the mind, body, and soul. It pushes me to limits I never dreamed of and the effects of physically doing what may seem impossible."
And while she has had some haters here and there after a video of her dancing went viral on WorldStar, Smith has also gained a lot of followers and become more in touch with her sexuality. Folks may call her #grannyonapole, but there's nothing decrepit about her.

"Pole dancing kept me in touch and in tune with my sexuality. Dressing up and going to class, wearing high heels, and dancing to great music is a terrific adrenaline boost. I would say that pole dancing promotes self-love!"
It also makes your love life all the more interesting. Just ask Smith's new man.
"All my exercising and poling is finally paying off," she said. "Pole dancing definitely increases your libido, stamina, and flexibility."
Well, all right now...
